The Job Finding Club provides a networking opportunity in which individuals who are seeking new employment can come together to share ideas, possible leads or information they may have picked up along the way, and support each other over coffee and donuts.  A Career Consultant will also share tips and tools that can help you in your job search. Résumés, etc.

An effective job search begins with well-prepared and up-to-date Job Search Tools. These should include a Cover Letter, Résumé, and a list of References, and may also include copies of your credentials and/or examples of your work.

WRCES staff can assist you in preparing and polishing these essential tools. If you don’t have a Résumé, the first step involves gathering your information.  (You can download a copy of our Résumé Worksheet, in either Microsoft Word, or PDF format, below). The information you collect in this step will be the basis for your final Résumé. Contact us to make an appointment with one of our Consultants, and bring your current Résumé  or completed Resume Worksheet to your appointment.

Résumé Worksheet (Microsoft Word 97-2003 Document)
Résumé Worksheet (PDF for Adobe Acrobat Reader)

You may also want to take a look at this document – Cover Letters, Résumés, and Dining Out – to give you a better idea of how these two items can help in your job search.

The reality is that your Résumé has about a 30-second chance in which to get the employer’s attention.  We can help you to make the most of this one-shot chance.

Here are some other thoughts to help you with your Résumé:

Résumé Boosters (“DO...")

  • Use active verbs (Click here for some ideas)
  • Leave adequate white space on the page – it helps important information to “pop-out”
  • Identify your job objective – e,g, “Full-Time Cashier at The Corner Store, Strathmore” (Why make an employer guess what you’re looking for?)
  • Submit both your Cover Letter and Résumé, but not your list of References – only provide this when asked for it.

Résumé Blunders (“Don’t...”)

  • Include your SIN number, or any other “personal information” such as marital status, age, ethnic background, or religious/political affiliation)
  • Exceed two pages in length (unless you’re a brain surgeon with 85 years experience!)

References

Normally, this lists 3 individuals who can talk about how effective you have been at your work, but who do you list?  The best references are (obviously) people with whom you have worked, and ideally those who have been in a supervisory role.

Even if they aren’t at the same company anymore, you can say something like “Former supervisor at __________”, and give their current contact number.  Just make sure you talk to them first, both to get their permission to give out their phone number, but also to jog their memory so they don’t go brain-dead when they get the call!

If you have limited work experience, one of these three references could be someone who knows you personally and can speak to your character, even though they never worked with you...

Interviewing

Once you get an employer’s attention, a successful interview can seal the deal. It’s not only your qualifications, but also how you present yourself and answer their questions that will lead to a job offer.

WRCES staff can help you to prepare for an interview, looking at interviewing strategies, providing sample interview questions, or even setting up a mock interview.  Contact us to make an appointment.

Remember – you can contact us with any questions you might have! We’re here to help you!
